Grandiose Competitions
After a long break, the Doberan racetrack founded by Friedrich Franz I, Duke of Mecklenburg is about to retake its traditional place in the German turf calendar. Horses were spurred here for the first time in 1822, so that this is not only the oldest racetrack on the European continent but also Germany ’s oldest sport according to fixed rules.
Also nowadays people do not come to the turf just to watch, but also to be seen. By the way, ten years before founding the horse racetrack the same sovereign lord had founded the stud farm at Redefin, where crossbred horses have been bred since that time. These days, stallion parades take place in the restored, classical stately building every year.
In a four-hour programme, the country stud farm presents its noble horses in about 20 displays. But in recent years world champions, European champions as well as Olympic athletes from many nations were competing with each other for prize money of a considerable amount even in small tournaments all over the country.
