Baltic Sea coast – Hanseatic League, sand, sea (and much more) GR 001

between Wismar and Rerik on the Baltic Sea coast

Ostsee Blowatz Urlaub280 days of sunshine a year, kilometres of expansive sandy beaches, a healthy climate and unspoilt nature, this makes the Baltic Sea coast unparalleled and Germany’s most beautiful region. Lined by steep coasts and salt water meadows, the saline lagoon extends round Boiensdorfer Werder peninsula up to Rerik Baltic Seaside Resort. The natural sandy beach, which exists here, is very popular with water sports people – surfers and kite surfers have a great area here. This region is also unique for the lovers of land-based sports, whether it be cycling, inline skating, jogging or hiking, nothing is impossible.
Culture is also high on the list of priorities, of course, and the Hanseatic cities of Wismar and Rostock as well as Kühlungsborn or even Rerik Baltic Seaside Resorts are just waiting to be discovered. Because of the good connection via the A 20 motorway, Hamburg Hanseatic City or even Berlin are only 2.5 hours away by car and are therefore an ideal destination for day trips.

The surrounding area:
The surrounding area provides ideal conditions for bathing holidays.
The beach, which is located right round the corner in Stove and Boiensdorf, is superbly suited to bathing, because it can easily be reached on foot (about 30min) or by inline skates.
Cycle paths and country lanes also lead to the extensive Baltic Sea sandy beaches in Rerik (14km) and Kühlungsborn Baltic Seaside Resorts (20km) as well as to Poel Baltic Sea Island (15km).
The Wismar (11km) and Rostock Hanseatic Cities - with their historic town centres, their large red brick churches, their zoos and, in Wismar in particular, its fun and adventure swimming pool - can easily be reached as well. Also, Bad Doberan (23km) (Baltic seaside resort), with its minster and “Molli” the narrow gauge railway, is worth a visit.
The bus goes to and from Wismar twice a day. Here, you have a connection to the public transport system. You can reach your accommodation via Wismar as well as via Neuburg-Steinhausen by train.

Saline lagoon – What is this all about???
The saline lagoon, with its natural coastal countryside, is an inland enclosed lake in Wismar Bay (western Baltic Sea). Lined by steep coasts and salt water meadows, the saline lagoon extends all around Boiensdorfer Werder peninsula up to Rerik Baltic Seaside Resort.
Nature lovers appreciate the saline lagoon as an area providing an abundance of flora and fauna species. Salt water meadows rich in biodiversity, which serve as botanical gardens for rare plants, among other things, were created because of regular flooding. Here, you can watch many rare types of aquatic birds.
The saline lagoon, with its shallow and calm water, is one of the most popular areas for surfing and sailing by the Baltic Sea.

Our accommodation:
Your accommodation is housed in a rural guesthouse, which is only 20 minutes away on foot from the natural beach of the saline lagoon, a small Baltic Sea bay.
The cosy house in the small village of Blowatz by the Baltic Sea coast is located right by the Baltic Sea long-distance cycle path and is ideal for groups. In the house, you will find 14 rooms with 2, 3 or 4 beds, which are practically but also cosily furnished and provide shower and WC. Single rooms are available for the group leaders. Overall, the house has room for a maximum of 40 people.
Two fully equipped communal kitchens are at the disposal of all the guests for self catering, half-board or full-board. A nice day room, furnished with a bar as well as a cosy seating corner with TV, invites you to linger. For one of the evenings, a disco can also be organised here, of course. Brochures, maps for hikes or information on relaxing bicycle trips to the surrounding area are ready for you, too.
A large terrace is part of the house, providing relaxation and the opportunity to have a barbecue or to sit round the campfire.
Here, no restrictions are placed on sports and games: on the lawn and in the playground you can play football, basketball or volleyball to your heart’s content.
You will certainly not be bored here!

The first day: Journey here
In the course of the afternoon, you will travel to your guesthouse by the Baltic Sea in Blowatz. There will certainly be enough time for exploring the surroundings or for organising a football or volleyball competition.

The second day: Wismar Hanseatic City
Today you will follow in the footsteps of the old Hanseatic League and get to know Wismar Hanseatic City. A 1-hour guided tour of the town is on the programme, but you should choose between the following topics beforehand: the period of the Hanseatic League as a period of glory, the brick Gothic style and the churches of the town, ship-building and shipping in Wismar and legends in and around Wismar. Afterwards you can explore the town centre on your own.

Ostsee Stove MühleThe third day: Grinding corn, baking and hiking

Today, you will be shown what the art of grinding corn and baking bread entails. Bread is still baked in the clay oven in the Dutch mill in Stove according to the old traditions. Afterwards, off we go to the beach, where you will have a picnic (packed lunch) before going for a guided hike around the saline-lagoon in the afternoon. Perhaps you will even find some beautiful and rare hag stones. After this hike, we will return to the guesthouse, where supper will certainly be ready for you.

The fourth day: Bicycle tour in combination with a boat trip
From Boiensdorf, you will start today with the ”saline lagoon motor launch“ for a bicycle trip on Poel Island. Your bicycles will have to be carried aboard, but you will have to walk through the water for the last few steps. You can explore the island by bicycle on your own and, after a 2-hour stay, the motor launch will come and fetch you for the journey back to Boiensdorf. We wish you “good wind and always a few centimetres of water below the keel”. Back in the guesthouse, we will have a barbecue in the evening and a campfire.

The fifth day: Journey home
Today, we will begin our journey home after a substantial breakfast.
