Course of the
day
Starting point: Hanseatic town of Rostock
1.
The drive goes from Rostock to Schwerin,
the capital of the province, along country roads and shady
avenues.
On arrival in Schwerin you visit Schwerin
Castle, the former ducal residence and today the seat of
the state parliament. It is said to be the most beautiful
domicile of a state parliament in Germany.
- Opposit Schwerin Castle is the Main State
Archive of Mecklenburg, an absolute must for anybody interested
in the history and research of emigration. Selected documents
of emigration are presented to you.
- Because there is so much to see and enjoy
in Schwerin you start a sightseeing tour by „Petermännchen“–train
to the wonderful open-air museum at Schwerin-Muess.
Lunchtime

Now you visit the former country town of Hagenow
that played an important part in the emigration process of
Western Mecklenburg.
- In the local museum you get to know reminders
of daily life in the 19th century and references of emigration
(i.e. letters, files, reports, especially to the life and
work of the democratic minded doctor Ernst Raber and of
the journalist Heinrich Haacke.)
- Visitors are impressed by the numerous objects
of traditional craftsmanship which are presented here.
- Afterwards you are invited to have lunch
in a restaurant with meals of the country.

Another place of interest is the village of Glaisin,
birthplace of the teacher, ethnologist and Low German writer
Johannes Gillhoff (author of „Jürnjacob Swehn,
der Amerikafahrer“, 1917)
- Possibility of attending the Gillhoff-room
- On a stroll through the roads of the lovely
rebuilt village you can get a good idea of the former Domanial
village.

The return drive goes through Wittenburg
and Gadebusch, small towns typical of Mecklenburg,
back to Rostock.
